thank You notes

There are so many ways to say thank you for every occasion you can think of. There are thank you notes, letters for social occasions, dinners, business meetings, gifts, friendships, weddings, interviews, customer loyalty, charitable donations, business gifts, housewarmings, to a professor and thanking mom and dad for paying college…I think this a big one, don’t you? In any event, a thank you is often, if not always warranted for any occasion where someone performs an act of kindness.

Here is a basic way to construct a classic thank-you note.

A Classic thank you includes;

  • Date
  • Salutation – Dear “___________,”; For a formal salutation include “Mr. or Mrs.”
  • Content – Thank the person for the gift and let them know how you plan to use it or add something extra like, “I look forward to seeing you soon”.
  • Closing – “Sincerely,”

Here are six “Do’s” when writing a Thank you note

  1. Handwrite your note using black or blue ink preferably on your own monogrammed stationery. With that said, buy some “Forever” stamps for mailing.
  2. Do use energetic adjectives like “amazing (personally I think this word is so overused…)” brilliant, generous, spectacular… you get the idea.
  3. Mention how you plan to use the gift. However, don’t mention that it’s going in the circular file.
  4. Compliment the person on their taste and how thoughtful they are.
  5. Keep your “thank you” to a note not a letter. A few sentences will suffice.
  6. Be creative in having the person feel unique.

Here are some closings that I picked from “Ways to say Thank you”

For Thank You Notes of:

  • Love and Friendship
    • Affectionately,
    • Fondly,
    • Love,
    • Love always,
    • With affection,
    • With warmest regards,
    • Your friend,

  • Special Gifts and Favors
    • Gratefully (or Gratefully Yours)
    • With sincere appreciation

 Clergy and Statesmen

  •  Faithfully Yours
  • Respectfully (or Respectfully Yours)
  • Yours Faithfully

 General Thank You

  • Best regards,
  • Best wishes (according to etiquette expert, Dorothea Johnson, use this when the wish is for something; i.e. best wishes for a speedy recovery or best wishes on your upcoming event)

I hope this helps you in writing out the thank you notes for all the barbecues and parties you will be invited to this summer.  Writing thank you notes is also a good way to distinguish yourself from other guests. Get yourself geared up for the upcoming holidays and more importantly just let someone know how much they are appreciated.
